Milan Dobeš was born in 1929 in Přerov, Moravia.
From 1951, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, first under Professor Ladislav Čermicky, later under Bedřich Hoffstädter and Professor Dezider Milly. In 1958, he had his first solo exhibition at the Youth’s Gallery in Bratislava (later renamed to the Cyprian Majerník Gallery). Even then, his work was characterized by the tendency towards visual-kinetic and light-kinetic objects.
The exhibition took place, even though the flexibility in the presentation of art was still not present at the time, but censorship worked under the guise of exhibition authorization committees which was primarily permitting the artistic production of socialist realism.
The second exhibition of Milan Dobeš was held at the Cyprian Majerník Gallery in Bratislava in 1965.
The exhibition that took place one year later, in the SČSSP House gallery in Prague, brought him success and was seen by more than 50 000 visitors.
Eased political situation after 1965 brought him world wide success, as he could do the exhibitions abroad: for example, Kunst-Licht-Kunst in Eindhoven (1966), Biennale of San Marino (1967), Documenta 4 in Kassel (1968), ARS ´69 in Helsinki (where he was ranked among the top 62 contemporary artists of the world), he also exhibited his light-kinetic object at the Expo exhibition in Osaka (1970).
He is ranked in the world´s various publications on constructivism and kinetic art.
Since 1973, he has been known for his sculptures in architecture particularly the ones for the wedding halls, hotels, as well as the exterior sculptures.
In 2007, he carried out a jewellery proposal (necklace, earrings, ring, cufflinks) for the Aharon company that later on creates a unique jewellery collection together with the eminent foreign and Slovak artists.

Author informations:

Milan Dobeš is key person of geometric and dynamic constructivism. He was found by core theoretists of at that time Frank Popper and Udo Kultermann (at Prague exhibition in 1966). According to this historical meeting, Dobeš´s career were pushed with deliberated 60´s. Enabled him to developed contacts around the world, so he was invited to the most significant exhibitions including "Documenta 4" in Kassel in 1968. In 1971 he also succeeded in touring with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra in the U.S.A. where he accompanied new musical compositions with his kinetic light program. Dobeš uses segments of circles both of varying width and radius and of varying length and color. Structure is still present but, de facto, it is hidden behind the arrangement of individual components. It contributed to the dynamic effect to each composition and thus brought a new dimension to the international school of geometrical art.
