During 1937 – 1942 he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague, where he also completed his diploma. In Prague, he was a member of the local art association Mánes (1945 – 1949. This expression in paintings as well as prints is typical for the war years of his work. An earthy colour scale is characteristic of his painting, reflecting the darkness of the war years, as well as themes that focus on symbolic representation of a lone human in form of a sad clown, circus person, biblical motive transferred to a civil scene expressing the inhospitableness of the situation and the loneliness in actions – Good Samaritan or mother´s embrace in Christian pieta. Since mid-1960´s, the influence of the so-called New Figuration is typical for his work. For Vincent Hložník, a form of figural painting where he obsessively processes uncomplimentary social and historic situations is characteristic. For achieving bigger expression, these mostly allow him to combine quick brushstroke, and at the same time, effigy of figure formed with painterly shortcut with bravura, extending the viewer´s experience of the theme.
